The Wildcats (17-6, 2-0) used an impressive second-quarter
run to break open a two-point game en route to a key district
victory over the Warriors (11-12, 1-1).
"The kids played well," Calallen coach Jeff Crews said. "We
have eight or nine guys that can come in and contribute, and
we proved that tonight. It will definitely be a harder game
the next time we play them (Feb. 1 at T-M), but that's still
a ways away."
The Wildcats scored the first seven points of the second
quarter and outscored the Warriors 25-4 in the decisive frame
to storm to a 40-17 lead at the half.
Calallen eventually built a 54-25 advantage, and T-M wouldn't
come closer than 24 the rest of the way.
Wildcats senior forward Michael Conroy had all 13 of his
points in the first half, while junior post Dustin Vaughan
and freshman guard Deron Belford also reached double figures
for Calallen with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Belford and Conroy were two of six different Wildcats with
a 3-pointer in the game.
T-M sophomore forward Grant Wilson had 13 points to share
the top scoring honors in the game with Conroy, while
senior guard Phillip Belford -- who was playing against
his nephew, Deron Belford, for the first time in an organized
game -- had nine points for the Warriors.
