2nd-half surge lifts Calallen to win over rivals
By GEORGE VONDRACEK Caller-Times
September 30, 2006
Add another wild one to the storied football rivalry between Gregory-Portland and Calallen high schools.
But don't let the final score fool you. This was no blowout.
After G-P gave Calallen fits for almost 27 minutes, the No. 4-ranked Class 4A Wildcats on the Northwest side of town arose, scoring the game's final 35 points to defeat their longtime rivals 49-24.
But blowout? Hardly.
"That was not the case," said Calallen senior running back Kindred McClure, who ran for four touchdowns.
"The score was no indication of this football game and no reflection of the Gregory-Portland football team," said Calallen coach Phil Danaher, whose Wildcats improved to 5-0. "They're a good football team and they're a quality football team."
Derek Parker, who ran for 112 yards for 2-3 G-P, scored on a 7-yard run early in the third quarter to give his team a 24-14 lead. From that point, it was all Calallen.
"We had a couple of fumbles in the third quarter. Those things are going to happen, but they came at a bad time for us," G-P coach George Harris said. "And of course, they have an outstanding passing game."
Calallen's Ryan Duke threw for 347 yards and two TD passes to Steven Vidaurri. The first one, a 42-yarder on a perfect post pattern, brought Calallen within 24-21. The second, a 35-yarder on a superb reception by Vidaurri, essentially iced the game with 3 minutes, 10 seconds left.
"We'd been executing well the whole game," said McClure, who has 11 TDs this season. "They had a few big plays. The second half we came out and did what we were doing. We just got into the end zone."
After Parker's TD, G-P didn't gain another first down until less than 2.5 minutes remained.
"We needed to play better defense. The first half we moved the ball offensively and we misfired. We did some foolish things. The second half we started playing a lot better defense."
Calallen turned a fumble recovery by Alan Ford - he also blocked a punt for a safety in the first quarter - into McClure's 1-yard scoring run and a 28-24 lead early in the fourth quarter. Calallen drove another 59 yards for its next score, sparked by Duke's 36-yard pass to McClure. McClure again provided the TD with a 5-yard sweep.
The defense held on the next series, and Calallen moved 60 yards in five plays, capped by the 35-yard Duke-to-Viduarri play. McClure younger brother Bryden added the capper with a 54-yard return of a fumble with 1:56 to play.
G-P had a total of 244 yards of offense at the break and 162 of them came on two of their 19 plays - the long scoring trap plays from James Smith and Cody Nance.
Before anybody could get settled in their seats, Smith busted loose on a trap play 82 yards for the first score of the night. Jonathan Velasco's point-after kick gave G-P a 7-0 lead.
Calallen, which had 241 first-half yards, was able to move the football behind Duke's passing. But the hosts couldn't dent the end zone. Calallen's first score came, after pinning G-P at its 17, when Ford blocked Rios' punt out of the end zone.
Calallen then put together a sustained drive for a score after gaining possession on the free kick. It was a costly series, however. Calallen methodically moved the ball downfield, apparently scoring on Duke's 18-yard pass to Sean Hoelscher. Hoelscher, however, was penalized for pass interference and was tagged with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Duke and Hoelscher hooked up again for a 42-yarder to the G-P 5, but Hoelscher again was tagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty and was ejected after catching four passes for 70 yards.
Still, McClure busted loose for a 20-yard scoring run on the next play. The 2-point conversion failed but Calallen led 8-7.
On its next possession, Calallen again got good field position and moved 49 yards in nine plays, but it was another costly drive. Skyler Hoelscher exited the game with a knee injury after a 12-yard reception to the G-P 7. Three plays later, McClure scored from the 3. The PAT kick failed and Calallen led 14-7.
Undaunted, Nance roamed 80 yards on the same trap play following the ensuing kickoff and G-P had tied the game at 14 with 5:16 remaining in the half.
G-P established its lone sustained drive at the close of the half after Justin Flores intercepted Duke at the 16. Holden Rios threw for all of his 19 yards in the drive and, aided by a Calallen personal foul penalty, G-P made it to the Calallen 16 before Velasco kicked a 33-yard field goal for the 17-14 lead with 4 seconds remaining
