#12 Skyler Hoelscher brings the Greyhound to ground. Skyler earlier had an interception and put Calallen in the lead 14-0.

Summary of the game: Newspaper Credit: Morning Valley Star:

Curse continues
Despite solid defense, Greyhounds get muzzled
By ARMANDO GARZAM
SAN BENITO - Calallen coach Phil Danaher knew exactly what to expect
traveling the two-plus hours to San Benito's Greyhound Stadium.

"San Benito's got an outstanding football team," Danaher said. "We knew
coming down here that defensively they were going to be tough. Boy, that
99 (San Benito defensive end Joey Nuņez) is a great football player."

Danaher and his Wildcats saw plenty from Nuņez and the rest of the San
Benito defense, but the Coastal Bend powerhouse was able to escape
with a 28-7 win over the Greyhounds in front of a capacity crowd Friday
night.

The Greyhound defense frustrated Calallen for most of the evening and
Danaher said his team had to fend them off the old-fashioned way.
"We knew they would do a lot of blitzing," Danaher said. "Then it was
time to fasten the ol' chinstrap, bite down on our moutpiece and run
some power football. We felt like that would slow their pass rush down."

San Benito's defense was superb the entire game, holding the Wildcats
to 212 total yards offensively, including a paltry 65 in the first half.

Calallen (1-0) made a splash right away on that opening possession,
driving 62 yards on five plays culminating with a 13-yard score by
Kindred McClure. Josh Rowden added the first of four extra points on
the night to make it 7-0 Wildcats.

"We started off slow and I think we were a little timid," said San Benito
coach Mario Peņa of the Wildcats' opening drive. "We had some miscues,
but we shut em' down thereafter, and our kids showed a lot of heart and
a lot of character."

After tossing an interception on its first posession, it was that San Benito
"D" that made the early statement.

On their own 29, Calallen's Ryan Duke (7-of-17 passing, 111 yards)
dropped back to pass and was leveled by Nuņez. The first-team all-stater
from a year ago then alertly recovered the ball to set up San Benito (0-1)
on the Wildcat 16. However, kicker Ricky Rodriguez missed a 38-yard
field goal attempt and San Benito came away empty.

After a Calallen punt, San Benito mounted an impressive drive and marched
all the way to the Wildcat 15.

Unfortunately for San Benito, that's where Calallen's Skyler Hoelscher
picked off Greyhound QB Raymond De Los Santos (13-38, 157 yards,
two interceptions) and galloped 95 yards for a touchdown to put his team up
14-0 still in the first quarter.

San Benito offensive coordinator Claude Bassett came down to the field from
the press box and the Greyhounds answered on there next posession,
driving 62 yards on 10 plays. Jonathan Medrano (6-28) scored on a 1-yard
dive to close the gap to 14-7 with 10:08 left in the half.

Right before intermission, the Greyhounds had two opportunities to tie the
game, but Greyhound receivers dropped back-to-back sure TDs and the
score remained 14-7 Calallen.

It would stay that way until late in the third when the Wildcats began to keep
San Benito's defense on the field. McClure scored from two yards out to make it
21-7 at the 5:37 mark in the frame. For the night, the Wildcats' leading rusher
finished with 100 yards on 17 carries and three scores.

The San Benito offense was without its two starting wideouts before the
game ever started.

After losing two-way starter Greg Castillo to an infection that required
surgery earlier this week, fellow starting wideout Angel Martinez then went
down in pregame warmups, suffering a laceration on his forehead that
required stitches.

Despite outgaining Calallen 157-146 in the second half, San Benito could not
mount a scoring drive.

The Wildcats added an insurance score late in the fourth as McClure scored
his third TD, this time on a 5-yard jaunt.

Despite the loss, Peņa said his team sent a message.

"I think that our defense proved that it can play with anybody in the
state," Peņa said. "I think we're going to be a team that will fight for the
district title."
